Sinclair James International Review: What to With Your Pets on a Flight
Most of the times,
most pet owners do not know what to do with their pets when on a flight. To
make it easier, we have allotted today’s feature for pet owners and address
their challenges when flying with their pets.
Whether you are
flying with your pet or it is flying without you, it is important to choose an
airline that serves the entire route from beginning to end. After finding your
airline, you will need to know their pet policies. Will the airline allow your
dog or cat to fly in the cabin with you? What are the restrictions? Will your
pet need to travel in the cargo hold?
Health Certificate
A health certificate
is required when shipping your pet as cargo. Most airlines will require a
health certificate for all pets checked as baggage. Some destination states may
require a health certificate for your pet such as health cities like Manila,
Philippines or Singapore. It is best to ask you veterinarian for more
requirements.
If a health
certificate is required, it must be issued by a licensed veterinarian within 10
days of transport. It must be authentic and not fraud. Airlines now have a lot
of ways to know the authenticity of your documents. It must include:
• shipper’s name and
address
• tag numbers or tattoos assigned to the animal
• age of the animal being shipped (USDA regulations require animals be at least 10 weeks old and fully weaned before traveling)
• statement that the animal is in good health (If the shipper knows that the pet is pregnant, it must be noted on the health certificate)
• list of administered inoculations, when applicable
• signature of the veterinarian
• date of the certificate

Live Animal Checklist/Confirmation of
Feeding
When you check in
your pet, you will be asked to complete a live animal checklist. When you sign
this checklist, you are confirming that your pet has been offered food and
water within four hours of check-in. On the checklist, you must also provide
feeding and watering instructions for a 24-hour period. If in-transit feeding
is necessary, you must provide food. This is to avoid any complaints of
improper handling of animals on board.
Tranquilizers
The use of pet
tranquilizers at high altitudes is unpredictable. If you plan to sedate your
pet, you must have written consent from the pet’s veterinarian. This
information must be attached to the kennel. Please keep in mind that some
airline agents cannot administer medication of any kind.

When we are traveling with kids, we are already expecting
things to turn out quite stressful. There is a big possibility of having a
boisterous and frantic flight, with you having to take care of both your kids
and your luggage. If the flight is too long or the journey too taxing,

2. Check In Properly
If the line is long, the open spaces in the airport can be a
good place to let the kids run a little while one parent waits in line to check
the bags. Remember to stay close in case the gate agent needs to see each of
the passengers or check ID. Just make sure you keep a keen watch on the child
as the airport can, despite the heavy security within, can still be crowded and
dangerous
3. Review the Essentials
Aside from the children’s things and necessary paraphernalia
for the flight, make sure you have packed your itinerary in the right luggage.
Nothing is worse than to struggle with the details and information while the
kids are pestering with tantrums and complaints.
4. Know children policy on airports
Check with your airline in advance about baggage restrictions.
On international flights, some airlines like that in Singapore, Beijing, China
and Manila, Philippines will allow a lap infant to check baggage; other
airlines exclude baby items like a car seat or stroller as part of the parent’s
baggage allowance.

Is English
Language a Hindrance to Communication for Foreigners in Asia?
One of the
hesitations of westerners in coming to Asia is the language barrier. True, Asia
has been a melting pot of different aspects of life that in every country,
there is a distinct characteristic and a culture which would seem odd to
someone who grew up in an entirely different perspective. Language is one of
the most flourishing uniqueness of Asian nations. Although their boundaries are
emphasized by mere walls which can be broken down easily, the brand of each
individual can still be determined on the language they use or most comfortable
with. Communication may be a problem as it is an issue which neighboring
countries also encounter on each other. Message relays or even simple gestures,
if interpreted wrongly can cause conflicts. Indeed, the complaints are valid.
However, on
the present day number of American and European visitors and the boost in
tourism economies, language barriers seem to have been surpassed. Perhaps, the
problem may not even exist at all.
According
to English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) and International English Language
Testing System (IELTS), Asian countries are not altogether illiterate in
speaking and understanding the universal language. If so, there are countries
which can even speak English as fluent as any native can. Take for example the
Philippines.
Once in Manila,
the country’s capital, you will find thousands of individuals representing
different nationalities. The center for business growth in the country,
Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) has proven the literacy of the people in
conversing using the international language. Clients from abroad prefer

Have
you ever been on a trip which is 15- 16 hours long?
A
long flight seems to be exciting for fist timers but the long and tedious wait
to land can cause great annoyance as well as cramp. The invention of
teleportation devices has not yet arrived so we, as mortals, still have to
endure. The best that we can do is to prepare for it. Here’s how:

Being cheap is not worth it
Money
should be valued and the amount that is to be spent on the first or business
class section of the plane can be an extra allowance to where you are going.
But trust me, after an hour or two in that economy seat you will start
complaining. Of course, who would want to endure the long hours of a flight
stuck in a seating arrangement which does not have enough leg room, unless of
course beside you is the person of your dreams? Availing of a first or business
class flight would be worth the money to get the fully reclining chair, 27
inches of legroom, edible meals, entertainment and breathing space. But if you
don’t have enough money for this, then, read on.
2.
It is not Advisable to Bring too Much Luggage
While
checked baggage fees are inspiring travelers to carry on more and more stuff,
on a long-haul flight this could burn you; anything that is under the seat in
front of you just means less legroom and a more cramped living space for 15 or 16
hours. Don’t bring too much that you compete for your own sleeping space. If
you are worried that the things you need are not available, no worries,
developing cities like Ghana, Africa, Manila, Philippines and Hanoi, Vietnam
are more industrialized than what you imagined.
3.
Make sure you have proper rest before take off
Don’t
depend on the long hour flight to get a long sleep. As attractive and intuitive
as it seems to get on a long haul flight extremely tired, hoping to sleep the
whole way, you are up for a disappointment. If you can and your eyes start to
droop, get the eye cover and ear plugs ready. A few extra rounds of games would
